KINIJIT PRESS RELEASE
February 5, 2008
The CUD has been an organization that has gotten the
love and respect of the People of Ethiopia at large. Its
principles and visions have brought millions of
Ethiopians together from all regions and ethnic groups.
By incarcerating CUD leaders for more than 20 months,
and investing millions of dollars, the ruling party has
been trying unabated to divide and kill the CUD.
Fortunately the CUD has shown its strength and
resilience in front of heavy attacks it received from
the ruling party as well as some bad elements within its
leadership.
It is to be recalled that the CUD has managed to
assemble the executive committee and council members in
a short period of time and reasserted itself again.
Today, February 5, 2008, another big step forward - more
than 40 members of parliament have officially signed
agreement with the CUD executives to work and function
according to the by-law and manifesto of the CUD.
Though the name and symbol of the CUD are illegally and
unconstitutionally given to individuals by the EPRDF
dominated National Board of Election, the movement for
democracy and equality that the CUD is for, is
continuing. The tent is growing. The fractured groups
are coming one by one to their mother organization.
Since this movement of democracy is owned by the people,
surely democracy and freedom shall soon prevail in
Ethiopia.

Breaking News
Kinijit Vice President Birtukan Midekesa and a senior leader of the
party, Eng. Gizachew Shiferaw, were arrested this morning by the Wolyta
Zone police when they were returning to Addis from a successful meeting
with Kinijit supporters in Southern region. Another Kinijit operative
Lt. Alemayehu Yeneneh who was traveling with them was also detained.
After few hours of arrest by authorities, they have been released. They
are now on their way to Addis, . The
Kinijit delegation led by Birtukan left Addis on Saturday to southern
Ethiopia to consult with the party's supporters.
The pretext was police was investigating a road accident though it is a
very clear case of intimidation aimed at Kinijit and its leaders. We
should expect more of the same in the coming months.
New Developments
Ato Endirias Ero, one of the compatriots of the party and the organizer
of the meeting that was held in Sawula was intimidated by the local
police today in the after noon and the police told him to appear to the
police office tomorrow for further interrogation |

Black Gold
amazing documentary
Multinational coffee companies now rule the shopping malls and
supermarkets and dominate the industry worth over $80 billion, making
coffee the most valuable trading commodity in the world after oil. But
while we continue to pay for our lattes and cappuccinos, the price paid
to coffee farmers remains so low that many have been forced to abandon
their coffee fields.

Nowhere is this paradox more evident than in
Ethiopia, the birthplace of coffee. Tadesse Meskela is one man on a
mission to save his 74,000 struggling coffee farmers from bankruptcy. As
his farmers strive to harvest some of the highest quality coffee beans
on the international market, Tadesse travels the world in an attempt to
find buyers willing to pay a fair price.
Against the backdrop of Tadesse's journey to London and Seattle, the
enormous power of the multinational players that dominate the world's
coffee trade becomes apparent. New York commodity traders, the
international coffee exchanges, and the double dealings of trade
ministers at the World Trade Organization reveal the many challenges
Tadesse faces in his quest for a long term solution for his farmers |
